S. formosus was first described in 2016 by occlupanologist K. Andrews in “Field Notes on the Occlupanids of Santa Cruz County, California”. C. Huning of DWORC sent in this pleasingly rose-colored holotype for the HORG archives. Over two hundred specimens have since been observed by DWORC across much of eastern Canada, with sightings in Ontario, Quebec, Nova Scotia, as well as in Illinois in the United States. It has been observed in many color morphs.
