During a careful taxonomic revision of the Eutreptosoma<\/em> species complex,\u00a0 GASTORC scholar H. Ellinwood uncovered a curious specimen among other Eutreptosoma<\/em> occlupanids. Its dential processes terminate at rough right angles, and its gular pouches and sharp oral hooks barely curve inward. While many researchers would add these to the many other oddball species found among the Toxodentidae, Ellinwood noticed a distinctively fungal<\/em> silhouette of its oral groove. Could this be another species of the rarely-encountered Mycognathidae? But for its bolete-like oral groove, B. obolformis<\/em> shares little else in common with the softly rounded L. rectangulus<\/em>; A controversial addition to an already controversial family! Perhaps intense variation is a common theme among this taxon? Until more information of its habits comes to light, the HORG Board of Taxonomy has seen fit to add this new species among the Mycognathidae, further complicating the work of any occlupanologists endeavoring to craft dichotomous keys.
