Genus Spirospirula,<\/em> like many of order Persolla, was not seen commonly in the United States until 2021 during the global Covid-19 pandemic. While most occlupanids are considered to be parasites of some nature, Persollids are thought to be more mutualistic with regards to the KN95 (and other) masks on which they are found, and to the humans who benefit by wearing the masks. This specimen was brought to HORG by field researcher L. Nowak of Henderson, NV.
